The Graduation Ceremony of Bryan McClain Delk

1 Thes 4:13-18
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

On the behalf of the family, I would like to thank you for being here, showing your love and appreciation to honor Bryan Delk and to the family.

Thank you for the beautiful flowers, the cards, food and the other kindnesses you have shown during this difficult time.

Most of all, thank you for your friendship. The family knows what a great guy Bryan was, but it is a wonderful thing to see it confirmed by so many people.

We are here today to honor and to pay our respects to Bryan Delk.

I believe as a preacher, there are three basic things I am supposed to do.
1.) Honor, and pay respects to the person.
2.) The second thing I am to do is to bring comfort.
3.) The third thing is to tell you how you can see Bryan again.

1.) Honor – Bryan Delk.

Best way was his life. You knew him. Let his life speak for himself.

Also, seeing how many lives he touched is a great way to honor him. So many people here last night and this afternoon.

Next, by friends who knew him.

I had the privilege of being his pastor for most of 19 years, but not only his pastor, but his friend and I will say some words about him in a minute, but one of his police buddies wanted to say some things about Bryan.

Bryan and I were friends.

We used to go to harvey’s gym together in the morning. We had a great time together. Life weights, talk, fellowship.

We have counseled together, went on double dates with our wives together, prayed together, cried together and had fun together.

He liked Mustangs, Harley’s and Jeeps. I like things that go fast also. He was buying a new mustang and needed to go pick it up. Laurie was working so he asked if I could go with him. Sure… We got there and I was going to drive the truck back, but he handed me the keys to the mustang and said you can drive it.

"What? – your new mustang." I said.
"Yea. I can drive it anytime" Bryan said.

Wow – even knowing how I drive. That was great. It was never the same after – (just kidding) I was good to it.

About a year ago, my son and girls were in a wreck and totaled my explorer. I didn’t have a car to drive for a while. Bryan told me I could drive his jeep if I wanted to. He had just bought the jeep a few WEEKS earlier, and it was brand new. I said no, that is ok. He literally insisted. He said, "I drive the company vehicle every day. I don’t need it now. Take it – use it for a month if you need to."

I realized – he really wanted me to take it.

I drove it for a week. That was how giving he was.

He loved to take people for rides in his vehicles. Whether it was the mustang convertible with his girls, the harley with his kids, or the jeep with anyone. He loved it.

I have one of my children that is not afraid to ask anyone for anything.

When he was little, we were at some friend’s house and he said to them – hey you have a big house with two people, we have a small house with a lot of people – we could just trade houses.

Anyway – he went to Bryan one day after church and asked him if he would give him a ride in his jeep. Bryan was glad to do it after he asked dad’s permission.

That was Bryan. He loved to make others happy and to use what he had for them.

2.) God is the God of all comfort.

God can lift any burden, and carry you through any trial. All we have to do is ask for His help.

God give me your grace…. How we make it through times like this is by God’s Grace – God’s grace is sufficient.

Grace is a power that God carries us during the hard times.

It is amazing to me to think about someone that we know is now with Jesus.
Can you believe it? Someone that you know is now in Heaven with Jesus? To me that is incredible.

His body might be here, but his soul and spirit are with God in Heaven.

The Bible says 2 Cor 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

TODAY I HURT FOR………family – and friends – not for

How does someone make it through a tragedy?
How does someone deal with the loss of a child or spouse?

There are ways the world tries, but they are “miserable comforters.” They might numb the pain, or forget for a while, but it is bigger later.

It doesn’t work and causes more problems.

What is the best way to handle any problem, setback, loss, tragedy, disappointment, and heartache?

Two simple words.

By faith!

Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.

Faith is looking forward to something good when there is no good to be seen now.

Faith is looking at tragedy and saying, “God has a plan.”

Faith is staring at an impossible loss and saying, “I know God will work this out for good.”

Faith is realizing that in the middle of hopelessness there is hope.

Faith is seeing no possible way of any good coming out of this situation, yet believing God is going to and will make good happen.

Ok – you say – I just don’t have that faith. I can’t see it.

I understand and many people are that way.

How can we get the faith so we can see and know that God has a plan, and that He will work it for good, and that there is hope?

Well, faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

Most people just look at things in the here and now and then how it immediately affects them.

We fail to do two things:
1.) Look behind us at examples of what God did.
2.) Look in front of us at the world to come

Let’s start with number one.

Let’s look at some people in the Bible that were examples of people who lived by faith and see what happened.

Hebrews 11 is called the heroes of the faith.

Great men who did great things for God.

Many of the verses start out with -…..
By faith Abraham
By faith Sarah
By faith Isaac
By faith Jacob

When you actually look at their lives, they had many burdens, heartbrakes, and didn’t see all the good that they were promised - some for years, and some not for their whole life.

Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

We have a hard time with that.

If it doesn’t happen now, when we want and so we can see it, then many times we get mad, upset and bitter at God.

The bible says that these people died in faith – not having received the promises.

How do we make it… faith.

Believing what God said.
1.) God does have a plan and purpose.
2.) God will work it for good in our lives if we will just love him and stay called to his purpose.
3.) That there is a world to come where it will all make total sense.

But today, we live by faith…..

The substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen.

Not big into poetry, but my favorite poem – and it definitely seems fitting today and illustrates this point.

I have sat beside a tiny crib,
and watched a baby die,
As parents slowly turned toward me,
To ask, Oh Pastor Why?

I have held the youthful husband’s head,
And felt death’s heave and sigh.
A widow looked through tears and said,
Dear Pastor, tell me why?

I have seen a gold-star mother weep,
And hold a picture nigh
Her lonely breast, and softly ask,
Why? Pastor, why, oh, why?

I have walked away from babyland,
Where still-born babies lie.
A mother stretches empty arms,
And asks me, Pastor, why?

I have watched my drunken Father leave
Our home, and say, good-bye,
While looking into Mother’s face
I asked, Please tell me why?

I have heard the white-tipped tapping cane,
Which leads a blinded eye.
And then a darkened, lonely voice
Cries, Preacher, show me why.

I have caught a fiancee’s burning tears,
And heard her lonely cry.
She held an unused wedding gown,
And shouted, Pastor, why?

I have heard the cancer patient say,
Tis gain for me to die;
Then look into his son’s face,
And mutely whisper, Why?

I have seen a father take his life.
A widow stands nearby;
As little children say, Dear Mom,
The Preacher’ll tell us why.

I’ve seen my mother stand beside
Two tiny graves and cry.
And though she’d never let me know,
I knew she wondered, Why?

I’ve heard an orphan faintly say,
Why gazed into the sky,
Mom and Dad have gone away,
My preacher will know why.

I tiptoed to my Father’s throne,
So timid and so shy,
To say, Dear God, some of Your own
Are wanting to know why.

I heard Him say so tenderly,
Their eyes I’ll gladly dry,
Tho they must look through faith today,
Tomorrow they’ll know why.

If now they find the reasons that
Their hopes have gone awry,
In Heaven, they will miss the joy
Of hearing Me tell why.

And so I’ve found it pleases Him
When I can testify,
I’ll trust my God to do what’s best,
And wait to find out why

Some people say it is a sin to ask why.

Jesus asked the Father why… "My God my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"

It is not a sin, and actually shows faith that God knows why.

3.) The Third thing I am supposed to do is to show you how you can see him again.

I know there are many people here, that love Bryan, and you will miss him and you would like to see him again.

2 Cor 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

John 14:2-3
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Acts 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

He settled it.

Some preachers say we can’t know where someone is.
Other say it is not their job to preach someone to heaven or someone to hell.

I think it is my job as a preacher to tell you what decision he made compared to the Bible.

I Jn 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

Let me quickly share with you how you can know you can go to Heaven.

Bryan knew this, and believed this. He would want you to know this.
There are four things that you need to know to go to heaven.

  1. All are sinners. No Bryan wouldn’t say he lived a perfect life, and I don’t think anyone here could stand up and say that either. In spite of what some people think………getting to go to Heaven has nothing to do with how good of a life we lived on this earth. None of us is perfect, and in fact, all of us are sinners.
  2. We all deserve to go to Hell.
  3. Jesus paid that price for us.
  4. All we have to do is accept Him as our only way to Heaven.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Eph 2:8-9
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Last thing before I close.

I felt like Bryan would now want me to say this.

Christian……live for God.
Serve God.
Spend your life for God.

None of knows how long with have to serve Him.

Only one life twill soon be passed.
Only what’s done for Christ will last.

Now – some of the members of his team will come and render final honors.
